Donna Metler has compiled a list of books that allow disabled children to see themselves reflected in the books they read.

NICHCY: A Guide to Children's Literature and Disability 
This is a very useful resource for parents  and teachers working with children with disabilities. NICHY's extensive biography groups children's books by the following specific disabilities: ADHD, blindness, cerebral palsy, deafness, learning disabilities, serious or life threatening conditions, physical disabilities, mental retardation, and other disabilities. The suggested grade level is given for each book, and there are links to other books concerning disabilities.

Sign Writing Children's Stories Series
A fun site with colorful booklets written in American sign language. Included are Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Humpty Dumpty, Cinderella, and two books written in Brazilian and Nicaraguan sign language. 

Feminist Themes/Strong Girl Characters

Vandergrift's Feminist Page
Another wonderful site from Kay Vandergrift in which she asserts the need for a feminist perspective for research in children's literature, examines feminist sub-texts in traditional male stories, and suggests further studies of how race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and personal life experiences influence reading strategies and the meanings that readers bring to texts. Included are

Beyond Female Protagonists - Female Voices in Picture Books
Kay Vandergrift presents a list of books that go beyond just having female protagonists. Some assist in the process of  recovering women's history, others celebrate women's forms of expression, others tell of a girl's relationship with her mother or father, and still others offer a new perspective on the older woman in the lives of children.

From a graduate student at UCLA, this bibliography designed for teachers, librarians, and parents lists books for children and young adults containing Latino themes and characters.  Grade levels are given for each book. 

Center for Study of Books in Spanish 
From California State University in San Marcos, this site contains a useful search engine that allows searches for over 5,000 Spanish language books for

Native Americans
A practical article from Carol Hurst on incorporating children's literature into classroom studies of Native American life and culture.  Includes suggested books with reviews and activities as well as web links.

Native American Books: Purposes, Philosophy, Guidelines 
This extremely informative and lengthy mission statement explores current issues relevant to Native American children's literature. Several critical reviews of unacceptable books as well as in-depth analysis/guidelines on how to identify culturally sensitive (as well as biased) books are presented.

Native American Children's Literature in the Classroom:  An Annotated Bibliography
This is a detailed and useful resource from Joan Berman, a Native American Studies Librarian and children's literature specialist at the Humboldt State University Library.
